The Artwork

Created in 1778, this study of the opal flower reflects a period when field sketches were essential tools for botanists and explorers. Such illustrations served as vital references for identifying and sharing new plant species among scholars, gardeners, and collectors. Gordon’s careful documentation contributed to the broader European understanding of global biodiversity, making each drawing a bridge between distant landscapes and scientific communities.

This artwork embodies the spirit of discovery and the meticulous cataloguing of nature that defined botanical art in the eighteenth century.

Style & Characteristics

The illustration presents the opal flower centrally against a pale, uncluttered background, emphasizing clarity and botanical accuracy. The delicate orange blossoms and vibrant green leaves are rendered with fine lines and subtle washes, creating a harmonious and balanced composition. The restrained palette and precise detail evoke the style of natural history folios, while the gentle color transitions lend the piece a refined, airy quality.

This vintage botanical print exudes calm and elegance, making it suitable for both scientific appreciation and decorative display.
