About the Artist
Ohara Koson, also known as Shoson and Hoson, was a leading figure in early 20th-century Japanese woodblock printmaking. Renowned for his kacho-e—images of birds and flowers—Koson blended a naturalist’s observation with poetic restraint, contributing significantly to the shin-hanga movement.
Through his collaboration with shin-hanga publishers, Koson helped revive traditional ukiyo-e methods for modern audiences. His works remain central to collections of Japanese woodblock prints, as seen in our Ohara Koson collection and among other famous artists.
The Artwork
Created in 1928, Geese amid Reeds reflects the shin-hanga era’s fascination with nature and seasonal change. The image shows a tranquil moment as geese glide through marshland, a theme often associated in East Asian art with migration, companionship, and the passage of time.
At a time when Japanese prints were gaining international appreciation, this work offered viewers a contemplative vision of the natural world. Its narrative of movement and stillness resonates with the poetic traditions that inspired Koson’s approach.
